THE WELL MAIDEN’S COTTAGE IN CLEWER Currently owned by Antje Brown.

There is a small, semi-detached terraced cottage known as The Well Maiden’s Cottage of Clewer Village, Windsor. This little Victorian cottage was built by no other than Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s sidekick and righthand man, Sir Daniel Gooch, whose grave can be found in the nearby burial ground of St Andrews church.

Since this morning well cottage has the most exquisite period stained glass front door created by no other than the entirely self-taught artisan and door genius, Barry Murphy. Hidden within the cottage with the beautiful door is a secret well dating back to the Norman or Saxon period. Lore has it that one Sunday morning William the Conquerer, who was accustomed to hear Mass at St Andrew’s church, prayed particularly hard and long. Locals speculated that sins lay heavily upon his conscience on that day (he was known to be a bit of a bad boy) and so upon leaving the church he said “all that praying has made me frightfully thirsty. Water, water someone help me quench my thirst.” A young and beautiful girl who lived in the little cottage with the now stunning period door made by Barry Murphy of Period Doors, stepped forward and said “Sir why not refresh yourself from water from my well. I am the well maiden of Clewer and my pleasure is to satisfy your thirst.” William jumped at the chance, followed the maiden to her little cottage with the well and drank the refreshing water. Rumour has it that William’s eyes met the well maiden’s eyes as he hastily gulped down the cooling water and was deeply smitten with her henceforth. Not much more is known about William and the well maiden but ….. more rumour has it that from this day forth William needed watering every Sunday.

The well in Well cottage, Clewer has since become known as the Little Lourdes of Windsor. Generations of well maidens have been selling the magical water now known as elixir, to those seeking eternal youth, beauty and health. The current well maiden inhabiting the cottage with the amazing period door Barry, the door man, made claims the water of the wells Life enhancing wellness qualities.
